Important note: This is an independent-study, self-paced course that you must complete in 60-days (excluding weekends and U.S. holidays). If you do not have experience taking an independent-study, self-paced online course, you may want to consider enrolling in the next 4-week cohort that starts on January 7, 2019.

Course Overview

Delivery Method

This course is organized into four Modules that are usually delivered one at a time for four consecutive weeks. Due to the amount of U.S. holidays in November and December, this November cohort of the course is self-paced—all of the Modules are available staring November 5th.

If you do not have prior experience with self-paced online learning, you may want to consider enrolling in the next 4-week cohort that starts on January 7, 2019.

There are between eight (8) and sixteen (16) hours of total Course Activities. Some participants will be able to finish a Module in less time than this, while others will require more time. You must complete all Course Activities by the Closing Datesixty (60) days after the course opens (excluding weekends and U.S. public holidays).

Independent Study

This course is designed for adult learners that have the qualities necessary to independently complete four Modules at their own pace. Technical support for the Canvas Catalog system is provided by the developer—Instructure (see Canvas Support in the Course Resources section).

Software Requirements

All software should be updated to the most current version available.

    • Internet Explorer 11 (Windows only—functionally supported; may exhibit slight visual differences from other browsers, but these differences do not restrict product functionality or accessibility)

Course Activities

Module Activities

You have an average of three weeks to complete each Module. We strongly recommend that you make a schedule for yourself. A time extension will only be granted under extreme circumstances (as determined by WebAIM). Participants that complete ALL Quizzes and Exams by the Closing Date will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Module Objectives

Module Objectives describe the high-level focus of each Module:

  • Module 1  – Participants will review basic principles and processes for creating accessible document content in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint documents.
  • Module 2 – Participants will review basic principles and processes for creating accessible document structure in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint documents.
  • Module 3  – Participants will review processes for utilizing built-in accessibility checkers, installing Adobe PDF Maker, and exporting PDF documents.
  • Module 4  – Participants will review how to configure Adobe Acrobat Professional, and how to use it to optimize a PDF exported from a well-structured Microsoft Word or PowerPoint document.


You will complete one Exam for each Module. All exams:

  • Are "open notes"—participants may use any resources they have developed.
  • Have ten (10) randomly-selected, multiple-choice questions (from the Module's Section Quizzes).
  • Are timedsix (6) minutes per question, for a total time of sixty (60) minutes.
  • Require a score of 80% or better to pass, with one retake during the week the Module is covered.

    Each Module is divided into topic-based Sections. Each Section has three components:

    Section Objectives

    Section Objectives identify how core concepts will be measured, and create an organizational structure that should guide your information integration activities. For example:

    •  Module 1: Document Content
      • Section 1: Overview of Document Accessibility
        • State four types of disabilities that can impact the use of electronic documents.
          • Describe the meaning of POUR.

      Learning Activities

      Each Section has one or more video-based Learning Activities. Learning Activity pages have three components:

      • Video: All videos have open captions. Most videos are between 5 and 10 minutes long.
      • Example File: Most videos have one or more Example Files that are used in the video.

      Section Quizzes

      Each Section has a Quiz. All quizzes:

      • Are "open notes"—you may use any resources that you have developed.
      • Have between four (4) and eight (8) multiple-choice questions that assess your mastery of the Section Objectives.
      • Are timedsix (6) minutes per question.
      • Require a score of 100% to pass, with unlimited attempts during the week the Module is covered.

      Here are some high-level terms that will be used throughout the course. These terms are narrowed to the scope of this course, and may not apply to other contexts.

      • assistive technology: hardware and/or software that acts as a user agent, or along with a mainstream user agent, to provide functionality to meet the requirements of users with disabilities that go beyond those offered by mainstream user agents.
      • document: Word or PowerPoint file, or a PDF created from a Word or PowerPoint file.
      • operating system: software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs (Windows or Mac for this course).
      • PDF (Portable Document Format): a file format used to present and exchange documents reliably, independent of software, hardware, or operating system.
      • PDFMaker: a plug-in for creating PDFs that is automatically installed into Word and PowerPoint by Adobe Acrobat Professional.
      • screen reading software (screen readers): software applications that convert digital information into synthesized speech.
      • screenshot: a digital image captured from a computer monitor.
      • source (native) document: a Microsoft file in one of two  proprietary formats: .docx for Word, and .pptx for PowerPoint.
      • structure: information in a document that is used by assistive technologies to present content correctly and/or give users the ability to customize the presentation.
      • user interface: the visual and programming elements that allow a user to interact with software running on a computer system.

      WCAG 2

      WCAG 2 is the de facto "standard" for procurement requirements, discrimination complaints, and accessibility lawsuits. These guidelines are an important tool for measuring and understanding the accessiblity of electronic documents.

      The W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2) are organized into four Principles:

      • Perceivable - Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
      • Operable - User interface components and navigation must be operable.
      • Usable - Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable.
      • Robust: - Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.

      There are 13 Guidelines that are organized under these four Principles. In Section 1 of Module 1 you will learn about tests called Success Criteria.
